6/23/25: How to Build a Supportive Community That Fuels Your Growth and Mental Health

When I say the word “community,” what comes to mind?  For some, it’s the houses and people that make up their neighborhood or town.  But for me? Community means people.  Not just any people—the ones who truly know me. The ones who encourage, support, challenge, and stand beside me.  My community isn’t based on geography. It’s built on connection.

According to Google (and Google knows everything, right?), community is defined as “a group of people who share common characteristics, interests, or geographic location, creating a sense of belonging and social cohesion.”

So, whether you define community by proximity or by personal connection—you’re not wrong.  But here’s the real question:  Why does community even matter?

Communities are vital because:

  1. They provide a sense of belonging and identity.
  2. They offer a support network.
  3. They offer learning and growth.

I believe you can have more than one community—and you should.  Just like I’ve told my daughters for years – “You can have more than one best friend.”  I do.  I have different “best people” for different parts of my life—

When your kids have pushed all the buttons and you feel like a bad mom, you will want to talk to the other mom who can relate to animals who eat their young.

When your husband is being a little extra, you are going to want people who will listen to whine, tell you about how awful their husbands are (even if they aren’t), and drink wine with you.

When something in your business has you feeling defeated, you want a community that will help you see the positives and bring you back to a healthy headspace.

Do you have a community—or a few—who:

  • Make you feel like you belong?
  • Offer genuine support?
  • Push you to learn and grow?

If so—congratulations! You’ve found your people.  If not? That’s okay too.

Finding your people takes time, intention, and sometimes a little courage.
But they’re out there—and you’re not meant to do life or business alone.
